The boxing match of the century that everyone has been clamoring for has finally been confirmed by both parties involved. Mayweather and McGregor took to social media on Wednesday to confirm that the fight has been scheduled. The fight itself will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and it will be contested at 154 pounds. The match itself will be what Floyd Mayweather is used to due to it being a standard 12 round boxing match with traditional 10-ounce gloves.
On Wednesday, the Nevada Athletic Commission approved the request from Mayweather Promotions for a boxing card on August 26 at the MGM Grand. However, the venue is expected to change to T-Mobile Arena.
How Will It Be Distributed?
The match itself will be distributed through Showtime pay per view entertainment. The entire event will feature boxing matches and Mayweather Promotions will take the lead in the promotion.
How Did This Happen?
This is truly a stunning twist of fate as Mayweather had initially stated that he was retired and that he would not come back to fight. What some would consider the greatest boxer of his generation/era, will now put his 49-0 record on the line against one of the most prolific UFC fighters of his era. Surely, the fight reaching such epic proportions of hype and financial backing had to sway his mind. This fight is expected to pay both fighters an excess of $100 million. With this fight, not only does he have a chance to make $100 million in a single night, but he also has the chance to take his undefeated record to a whopping 50-0.
Because McGregor is one of the most (if not the most) elite mixed martial arts fighter in the entire world, it is not expected to be such an easy task. However, McGregor himself has never been in a professional boxing match in either amateur or pro. Therefore, this can largely be considered one of the toughest tasks of his entire career. He did win the UFC featherweight title in a mere 13 seconds by way of knockout, but this promises to be another hurdle along his way of proving his greatness to the world.
The fight itself came together largely due to McGregor’s desire to fight Mayweather. This started an ongoing back and forth exchange between the two on social media until both parties finally agreed.
While this fight itself largely seemed like a long shot at first considering the lack of experience that McGregor has in the boxing ring, the money ended up prevailing. The issue that largely held up the negotiations was how the financial split would go with Mayweather and McGregor. Once those terms were ironed out, the negotiations went smoothly.
This mega fight is expected to draw record breaking viewers from across the globe. It is surely going to be one of the biggest moments in boxing history in a sport with far too few epic moments in recent times.
